Gabriel Cousens, M.D., M.D.(H), Dip. Ayurveda, runs the Tree of Life Rejuventation Center in the sunny state of Arizona, USA.
In this article, Dr. Cousens shares research on how sunlight is utilized by the human body and its cells.
Light is the basic component from which all life originates, evolves, and is energized. Light and health are inseparable. Because we have managed to disconnect ourselves from the sources of light with our fluorescent lights, indoor lifestyles, glasses, contact lenses, sunglasses, tanning lotions, flesh foods, processed foods and even cooked vegetarian diets, many of us suffer from chronic “mal-illumination.” Like malnutrition, “mal-illumination” deprives us of a level of nutrients and rhythmic stimulation that is essential for living as fully healthy humans.
Noble Prize Laureate Dr. Szent-Gyorgi describes the essential life process as a little electrical current sent to us by the sunshine. Without light there is no health. This statement is a key in understanding the importance of vegetarian live foods and of other ways of bringing light into our organism. We are human photocells whose ultimate biological nutrient is sunlight.
Dr. Szent-Gyorgi, when referring to the current of sunshine sent from the sun, is referring to highly charged single electrons that are involved in transferring their energy to our own submolecular patterns without changing our molecular structure. The quantum physics model begins to validate our more intuitive model of vegetarian food as condensed sunlight which then is transferred to our human organism when we eat it.
When the energy of the earth’s vegetation is transferred to us indirectly through flesh food, much of the bio-electric resonant energy patterns are destroyed. The sunlight energy is also lost if the bio-electric energy patterns of vegetarian foods are disrupted by cooking or processing.
The exciting breakthrough for me is the conceptual synthesis of how our food brings the photon energy of sunlight into our body and how our bodies utilize this energy. I alluded to these concepts when I discussed the research by Dr. Hans Eppinger who found that all cells were essentially batteries which appeared to be charged up when people were healthy. When people were sick, he found their cells to be in a discharged state and poorly functioning. The significant finding is that only uncooked foods were able to increase the cell battery potential.
The next step is understanding cellular metabolism as a battery. The positive pole is energetically fed by oxygen. The negative pole is fed by the high electron photon energy collected from the sun and stored in our vegetarian live food. This high electron food releases its electron energy across the cytochrome oxidase system. The cytochrome oxidase system acts as a step down transformer to turn the electron energy into ATP. ATP is the basic energy storage molecule of biological systems. The biochemical releases of energy from ATP are the fuel for all energy requiring processes at the molecular level in our biological systems.
The electrons are essentially drawn across the cytochrome oxidase system by the oxygen at the positive pole of the intracellular battery. The more oxygen in the system, the stronger the pull. Breathing exercises, eating high-oxygen foods, and living in atmospherically clean, high-oxygen environments increases our overall oxygen content. The key understanding is that the cytochrome oxidase system exists in every cell and requires electron energy to function.
This electron energy comes from plant foods as well as what we directly absorb. When the food is cooked the basic harmonic resonance pattern of the living electron energy of the live food is at least partially destroyed. Once understanding this scientific evidence, the logical step is to eat high-electron foods such as fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, and sprouted or soaked grains.
Dr. Johanna Budwig from Germany holds degrees in physics, pharmacy [and] […] chemistry […] and is one of the first researchers to combine an in-depth knowledge of quantum mechanics and physics with an in-depth knowledge of human biochemistry and physiology. She has concluded that not only do electron-rich live foods act as high-powered electron donors, but electron-rich foods act as solar resonance fields in the body to attract, store, and conduct the sun’s energy in our bodies.
She asserts that the photons of the sunlight are attracted by the sun-like electrons resonating in our biological systems, especially in the double bonded electron clouds found in our lipids. These sun-like electrons are termed pi-electrons.
This pi-electron system within our molecular structure has the ability to attract and activate the sun photons. She feels the energy we derive from these solar photons acts as an “anti-entropy factor.” Translated into biological terms, entropy means aging. Anti-entropy is associated with the reversal of the aging process. From a quantum physics point of view, photons never become old; they have the same quickness as time. Sun photons transfer a high degree of order (anti-entropy energy) into the pi-electrons of our biological system. The more light we absorb into our system, the more health-restoring and anti-aging energy we bring into our human organism.
Therefore, people who eat refined, cooked, highly processed foods diminish the amount of solar electrons energizing the system and the amount of high solar electrons to create a high electron solar resonance field. According to Dr. Budwig, processed foods may even act as insulators to the healthy flow of electricity. The more we are able to absorb solar electrons, the better we are able to resonate, attract and absorb solar electrons in direct resonance from the sun, other solar systems, and even other galaxies. On a skin-deep level, the more we are able to absorb solar electrons the less sunburn and theoretically, the less skin cancer there will be.
Perhaps the two highest solar electron-rich foods and foods which have the capacity to absorb solar electrons are spirulina and flaxseed in various forms, including flaxseed oil. Dr. Budwig has reported cases of general ill health, and of even cancer, which have been reversed through the use of large amounts of flaxseed oil which has increased the amount of electron energy into the system and therefore created enough energy available to heal the system.
Because spirulina grows at high altitudes in high-temperature environments, it has increased beta-carotene, other carotenoids, enzyme systems, and other biological components to better absorb the intensified solar and cosmic radiations. I discovered that by ingesting spirulina and rubbing the product called Phycotene Cream (developed by Dr. Christopher Hills at Light Force) on myself, other members of our staff, and volunteers, we did not seem to get sunburned working long hours in the sun-filled skies of our mountain mesa at our Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, Arizona.
Other research has shown that spirulina and Phycotene Creme have been successful in reversing squamous cell skin carcinoma and dissolving pre-cancer squamous cell carcinoma. Other research has found that three-fourths of the people who were hypersensitive to sunlight (suffering from erythropoetic protoporphinaria) were able to increase their exposure time in the sun. Three-fourths of those who improved their tolerance were able to be exposed to sunlight four times longer. For those of us who understand that we are human photocells who often suffer from mal-illumination, this is an extremely exciting finding.
Dr. Budwig also found that when the flaxseed oil is combined with highly charged protein, the three double bonded electron clouds available in the raw flaxseed oil and the protein, make a bi-polar capacitor grid which even better absorbs, stores, and transmits the exchange of solar electrons and enhances the solar resonance. She often uses a type of cottage cheese as a high-protein food to combine with the flaxseed oil. As a nondairy vegetarian, I find that bee pollen and spirulina are perfect high-protein concentrated foods to combine with flaxseed oil.
The discoveries of modern physics and quantum biology, according to Dr. Budwig, suggest there is no other living thing in nature that has a higher accumulation of the sun’s electrons than human beings. Humans seem especially aligned with the sun’s light. By the same solar electron resonance, our connection to the stars is enhanced by our ability to take in the gift of their light energy and process it biochemically. Light is our umbilical link to the universe.
Our ability to enrich ourselves with solar cosmic energy depends on eating foods with a high solar electron content that resonates with and attracts solar and cosmic rays. Our health and consciousness depends on our ability to attract, store, and conduct electron energy which is essential for the energizing and regulation of all life forces. The greater our store of light energy, the greater the power of our overall electromagnetic field, and consequently the more energy is available for healing and the maintenance of optimal health.
A strong solar resonance field promotes the evolution of humanity to reach our full potential as human “sun beings.” Light supports evolution and a lack of photons in our bodies hinders it. Light and consciousness are interconnected.
As far back as the turn of the century, Rudolph Steiner, the founder of the Waldorf schools, Anthroposophical Medicine, and biodynamic gardening taught that the release of the outer light into our systems stimulates the release of an equal amount of inner light within ourselves. The more we increase our ability to absorb and assimilate light, the more conscious we become.
The more we transform ourselves by enhancing our absorption of light, the more we become that light. This is the subtle secret of ‘conscious eating.’

Why are eminent doctors taking him seriously?

There are few people, however busy their lives, unable to remember the last meal that they consumed. But Prahlad Jani is one of them.
And the reason is that the last morsel of food that he says passed his lips did so in the early years of World War II.
‘I can’t recall exactly what it was,’ the 82-year-old Indian admits. ‘It was such a long time ago.’
During the 70-odd years since, Mr Jani says he has eaten not so much as a single grain of rice nor consumed a drop of water. And while such an extended gap between meals might be expected to have a fatal impact on the activities of one so deprived, this octogenarian says he’s never felt better.
Tests: 83-year-old Prahlad Jani has twice attended hospital to be watched round the clock by eminent doctors.
‘Although I walk 100 or 200 kilometres in the jungle, I never sweat and don’t feel tired or sleepy,’ he says. ‘I can meditate for three, eight or 12 hours — or even months.’
No food? No water? Superhuman strength? One straitjacket (size zero) for Mr Jani, please.
It is, of course, more than tempting to dismiss this Hindu holy man and his claims as the stuff of absolute nonsense.
Medical science tells us that human beings rarely survive more than a week without water, and a couple of months at most without food. To even suggest otherwise is ridiculous, and also potentially dangerous.
Practitioners of extreme starvation diets can cause serious damage to their bodies, leading to death. And yet, despite all that is known, there is a growing bandwagon that says Mr Jani and his incredible claims should not be dismissed entirely out of hand.
On Thursday afternoon, he emerged from hospital in the Indian state of Gujarat, where he had spent 15 days. He was monitored around the clock and, according to the medics who oversaw him, consumed no food and no water whatsoever.
No human should be able to survive such conditions unscathed — the lack of water alone should have killed him. But Mr Jani apparently suffered absolutely no ill-effects at all.

Attending a press conference at the Sterling Hospital in Ahmedabad, he said: ‘I am fit and strong today and even the doctors agree. They ran every test possible for 15 days and proved that I do not need food to keep me strong.
'I am strong and healthy, because it is the way God wants me to be.’
So what is the explanation for his ability to endure such privations? No one knows for sure. But over the next three months, the medics will attempt to come up with some answers as they study the results of a battery of tests.
Military scientists drawn from India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation believe that Mr Jani could hold the key to understanding how humans can be taught to survive for long periods without sustenance.
‘It is possible that it will be able to help save human lives during natural disasters, high altitude, sea journeys and other natural and human extremities,’ said a spokesman for the team.
‘We can educate people about the survival techniques in adverse conditions with little food and water, or nothing at all.’ He added: ‘If his claims are verified, it will be a breakthrough in medical science.’
By any standards that is a very big ‘if’. For starters, the doctors are considering only the two weeks during which Mr Jani was under their supervision. His claims not to have eaten for the preceding seven decades can and will never be
verified. The same goes for much of his early history.
According to his version of events — and there is no other — Mr Jani left his home in Rajasthan at the age of seven, and went to live in the jungle.
When he reached the age of 11, he underwent a religious experience during which he became a follower of the Hindu goddess Amba. In her honour, he chose to dress as a female devotee, wearing a red sari-like garment, nose-ring, bangles and crimson flowers in his shoulder-length hair.
In return, Mr Jani believes that the goddess has sustained him ever since by feeding him with a lifegiving, invisible ‘elixir’, which has supposedly given him the strength to continue without food or water.
For at least the past 40 years, Mr Jani has been living, hermit-like, in a cave in the jungles close to the Gujarati temple of Ambaji. He rises at 4am, spending most of the day meditating.
While well-known locally, for many years Mr Jani was no more famous than the millions of other Hindu holy men — sadhus or yogi as they are known — in India.
Mystical figures, these individuals renounce normal life for one on the margins of society, focusing every waking minute on the spiritual. They often assume austere or extreme practices — standing on one leg or refusing to talk for years on end.
Like Mr Jani, many sadhus regularly undergo lengthy periods of fasting. But the claim that his fast had endured for decades caught the public imagination and first propelled him into the limelight.
Challenged to prove that he could survive without food or water, in 2003 he underwent his first hospital investigations. Then, as now, he was placed under the care of Dr Sudhir Shah, a consultant neurologist from Ahmedabad who specialises in studying people with seemingly ‘supernatural’ powers.
Doctors had prepared a special glass-walled room equipped with CCTV cameras to monitor Mr Jani for ten days. The toilet was sealed to test his claim that he had no need to urinate or defecate.
The only fluid allowed was a small amount of water, to use as mouthwash. This was collected and measured in a beaker when he spat it out, to make sure that none had been drunk.
Scans revealed some urine accumulation in his bladder, but this seemed to be re-absorbed by the body because it was never passed.
In every other respect, clinically, Mr Jani was found to be perfectly normal.
While the results secured him an international following, they failed to offer any concrete answers. As a result, Dr Shah and the military team decided to repeat the experiment this year.

So, on April 22, Mr Jani re-entered the hospital for 15 days of tests. They ended on Thursday afternoon with doctors admitting that they were baffled by what they had seen.
Presenting their preliminary findings, Dr Shah was joined by biologist Dr Ilavashagn, director of the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), a heavily-funded department of the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
The doctors announced that despite apparently living on thin air for two weeks, the holy man was more healthy than someone half his age.
Blood tests, hormone profiles, MRIs and angiographs (imaging tests of the blood vessels) all pointed to the conclusion that Mr Jani had not needed to eat, drink or use the toilet once.
Dr Ilavazhagn said: ‘Clinical, biochemical, radiological and other relevant examinations were done on Prahlad Jani and all reports were within the safe range throughout the study. He is healthy, his mind is sharp.
'What is truly astonishing, and something we have no explanation for, is that he has not passed stools or urine. To my knowledge, that is medically unprecedented.’
There will be many who maintain that the latest tests prove nothing — and that Mr Jani’s survival is down to nothing more mysterious than trickery.
That’s the view held by the Indian Rationalist Association, an organisation which publicly campaigns against superstition and spiritual fraudsters.
It has attacked the Indian Ministry of Defence for even agreeing to take part in the tests, accusing them of being ‘taken in by the absurd claims of a village fraud’.
Sanal Edamaruku, the association’s secretary general, told the Mail: ‘I asked to be allowed to send an independent team to survey the room where this test is taking place, but I was repeatedly turned down.
'It is ridiculous to ask people to believe that any man can go 15 days, let alone 70 years, without food or water.

Mr Edamaruku is convinced that Mr Jani must have had access to food and water at the hospital, and does not believe that he was kept under strict supervision around the clock.
He says that whenever the Rationalist Association has investigated individuals making similar claims, all have been exposed as frauds.
In 1999, they investigated a woman who claimed that she was the reincarnation of another Hindu goddess. For five years, she had remained alone in a small closet where it was claimed she had not eaten nor passed any urine or faeces.
In co-operation with the police, investigators from the association searched the room, finding a toilet hidden behind a shelf and a disguised hole through which she received food. Blood tests revealed the presence of glucose, indicating the intake of food.
To further prove the case, a gas was released into the room that made the woman vomit. The contents of her stomach were found to include pieces of recently-eaten chapatti and potatoes.

Mr Edamaruku is concerned that by publicising the activities of individuals such as Mr Jani, others will be encouraged to copy.
‘The Hindu religion is a belief system that’s all about magical thinking, about great things happening that are not understandable to the ordinary person,’ he explained.
‘These claims are very dangerous, because people try to follow these holy men and can end up hurting themselves.
‘In any other religion there’s a priest who requires a lot of training and there’s a structure which means people can’t just make up their qualifications.
'In Hinduism, anyone can become a guru overnight. You just decide that’s what you are, dress the part and become it.’
Perhaps he’s right. Doesn’t logic and common sense dictate that Prahlad Jani must be tricking the world somehow?
And yet, there’s a part of all of us that would love to believe such a human ‘miracle’ could be true.
After all, isn’t a consultant neurologist staking his reputation on these tests being entirely watertight?
We may never know the truth, but until he is exposed as a fraud, perhaps we should enjoy suspending our disbelief and give Mr Jani the benefit of the doubt.
After all, wouldn’t life be boring if everything was rational?

Prahlad Jani, an Indian yogi who claimed he could survive without food or water, died at the age of 90 on Tuesday, according to a report.
Jani told the AFP in 2003 that he had the "elixir of life from the hole in my palate, which enables me to go without food and water."
He believed he was blessed by a goddess as a child, which enabled him to survive without basic necessities.

INTRODUCTION
In all of God’s marvelous creation there is no object more beautiful and beneficial to mankind than the sun. The sun provides us with light, energy and warmth. It makes plants grow.
It regulates the hormonal cycles of animals and humans. It stimulates the production of vitamin D in our skin, which is essential for health, and the secretion of serotonin in the brain, which is essential for well being.
But more than this, the ancient people in every culture and religion knew that sunlight was the key to immortality and enlightenment. The ancient Incans, Egyptians, Zoroastrians, Mithrians, Essenes, Therapeuts, Greeks, Romans, and Native Americans would gaze at the sun during certain times of the day, recite special prayers and mantras, and perform mudras or hand gestures.
Most present-day archeologists and anthropologists dismiss this as the sun worship of primitive societies. They ignore the fact that the monotheistic solar religions of Zarathustra and Akhenaton liberated men for a short while from bondage to the superstitions of pantheistic religions and created peaceful utopian societies.
They also ignore the fact that the great teacher of sungazing, Viracocha, otherwise known as El Dorado or Quetzalcoatl, raised the primitive tribes of the Central and South American jungles into civilized societies that had knowledge of medicine, metallurgy, farming, animal husbandry, writing, engineering, mathematics and astronomy with cities containing hundreds of stone buildings, water and sewer systems and paved roads.
One maverick archeologist, Gene Savoy, who discovered several of these lost cities of South America, read the records of this ancient solar science and rediscovered its principles and techniques. However, just as the sungazing Essenes did,Savoy kept this information secret and passed it on by word of mouth only to select initiates of his school.
Fortunately, in 1992, a simple, humble man from India, Hira Ratan Manek (HRM) began to teach simple, safe and enjoyable techniques of sun imbibing such as sungazing and sun-charged water. He had spent years researching and experimenting before he felt confident enough to offer this knowledge to the world. Since then he has taught hundreds of thousands of people in over 1300 lectures in a dozen countries across the globe.
I attended one of them. If it weren’t for him, this book would not have been written. As he tells people in his lecture, “Sungazing is a cost-free, guru-free practice that will free mankind from mental and physical disease and spiritual ignorance.” Could it be that simple? Just stare at the sun and your worries will melt away, your body will be healed and you’ll become enlightened? It sounded too easy to be true, but as I continued to faithfully sungaze and do the three other practices of sun imbibing,
I found myself becoming more carefree and loving, my “incurable” leukemia slowly died, and I have begun a walk with God that is peaceful and exciting at the same time. This was a new paradigm for me and difficult to grasp at first. I had always tried to solve a problem by researching it to death. I had always thought that the word “understanding” meant that when you stand under a problem and see all its underlying parts, you can arrive at a solution.
But now my understanding of understanding is this: When you stand under the sun and receive its healing and enlightening rays, you will automatically arrive at the SOLution, for the sun is over all.

In all of God’s marvelous creation there is no object more beautiful and beneficial to mankind than the sun. The sun provides us with light, energy and warmth. It makes plants grow.
It regulates the hormonal cycles of animals and humans. It stimulates the production of vitamin D in our skin, which is essential for health, and the secretion of serotonin in the brain, which is essential for well being.
But more than this, the ancient people in every culture and religion knew that sunlight was the key to immortality and enlightenment. The ancient Incans, Egyptians, Zoroastrians, Mithrians, Essenes, Therapeuts, Greeks, Romans, and Native Americans would gaze at the sun during certain times of the day, recite special prayers and mantras, and perform mudras or hand gestures.
Most present-day archeologists and anthropologists dismiss this as the sun worship of primitive societies. They ignore the fact that the monotheistic solar religions of Zarathustra and Akhenaton liberated men for a short while from bondage to the superstitions of pantheistic religions and created peaceful utopian societies.
They also ignore the fact that the great teacher of sungazing, Viracocha, otherwise known as El Dorado or Quetzalcoatl, raised the primitive tribes of the Central and South American jungles into civilized societies that had knowledge of medicine, metallurgy, farming, animal husbandry, writing, engineering, mathematics and astronomy with cities containing hundreds of stone buildings, water and sewer systems and paved roads.
One maverick archeologist, Gene Savoy, who discovered several of these lost cities of South America, read the records of this ancient solar science and rediscovered its principles and techniques. However, just as the sungazing Essenes did,Savoy kept this information secret and passed it on by word of mouth only to select initiates of his school.
Fortunately, in 1992, a simple, humble man from India, Hira Ratan Manek (HRM) began to teach simple, safe and enjoyable techniques of sun imbibing such as sungazing and sun-charged water. He had spent years researching and experimenting before he felt confident enough to offer this knowledge to the world. Since then he has taught hundreds of thousands of people in over 1300 lectures in a dozen countries across the globe.
I attended one of them. If it weren’t for him, this book would not have been written. As he tells people in his lecture, “Sungazing is a cost-free, guru-free practice that will free mankind from mental and physical disease and spiritual ignorance.” Could it be that simple? Just stare at the sun and your worries will melt away, your body will be healed and you’ll become enlightened? It sounded too easy to be true, but as I continued to faithfully sungaze and do the three other practices of sun imbibing,
I found myself becoming more carefree and loving, my “incurable” leukemia slowly died, and I have begun a walk with God that is peaceful and exciting at the same time. This was a new paradigm for me and difficult to grasp at first. I had always tried to solve a problem by researching it to death. I had always thought that the word “understanding” meant that when you stand under a problem and see all its underlying parts, you can arrive at a solution.
But now my understanding of understanding is this: When you stand under the sun and receive its healing and enlightening rays, you will automatically arrive at the SOLution, for the sun is over all.

According to a June 2014 article featured in The Independent (UK), a major study conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that women who avoid sunbathing during the summer are twice as likely to die as those who sunbathe every day.
The epidemiological study followed 30,000 women for over 20 years and “showed that mortality was about double in women who avoided sun exposure compared to the highest exposure group.”
Researchers concluded that the conventional dogma, which advises avoiding the sun at all costs and slathering on sunscreen to minimize sun exposure, is doing more harm than actual good.
That’s because overall sun avoidance combined with wearing sunscreen effectively blocks the body’s ability to produce vitamin D3 from the sun’s UVB rays, which is by far the best form of vitamin D.
In the USA, vitamin D deficiency is at epidemic levels. Ironically, vitamin D deficiency can lead to aggressive forms of skin cancer. A ground-breaking 2011 study published in Cancer Prevention Research suggests that optimal blood levels of vitamin D offers protection against sunburn and skin cancer.
Additionally, vitamin D protects the body from diseases like multiple sclerosis, rickets (in the young), tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjogren’s syndrome.
According to the Vitamin D Council, researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently reported that “lack of sun exposure may lead to cognitive decline over time.”
A dissident dermatologistBernard Ackerman, MD, (deceased 2008) was one of the world’s foremost authorities on the subject of skin cancer and the sun, sunscreens and melanoma skin cancer risks.
Below are Ackerman’s views excerpted from an article in The New York Times (July 20, 2004), titled “I BEG TO DIFFER; A Dermatologist Who’s Not Afraid to Sit on the Beach”:
The link between melanoma and sun exposure (dermatology’s dogma) is unproven.There’s no conclusive evidence that sunburns lead to cancer.There is no real proof that sunscreens protect against melanoma.There’s no proof that increased exposure to the sun increases the risk of melanoma.
A 2000 Swedish study concluded that higher rates of melanoma occurred in those who used sunscreen versus those who did not.
Sunscreens: Cancer-Causing Biohazards Elizabeth Plourde, PhD, is a California-based scientist who authored the book Sunscreens – Biohazard: Treat as Hazardous Waste, which extensively documents the serious life-threatening dangers of sunscreens not only to people but to the environment as well.
Dr. Plourde provides proof that malignant melanoma and all other skin cancers increased significantly with ubiquitous sunscreen use over a 30-year period. She emphasizes that many sunscreens contain chemicals that are known carcinogens and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC).
Environmentally, she notes: “In areas where there has been much exposure to ED [endocrine disrupting] chemicals, coral and other sea populations have died off and the prevalence of dual-sexed fish has risen.”
Dr. Plourde’s research on mice and sunscreen exposure also showed increases in both pup and maternal mortality as well as reproductive issues in subsequent generations.
