Get rid of the term mental illness and call what these things really are. Brain Health Issues.
If there was an evil ruler and wanted to create mental illness in America, how would they do it?
Create American society where the food system is broken. 70% are overweight, 40% are obese. As our weight goes up, the size of the brain size and function go down. This should scare the fat off anyone.
The fat on our body is not inoculated to us. It increases inflammation, it stores toxins and it takes healthy hormones and turns them into unhealthy cancer promoting forms of estrogen.
Food may be responsible for half of the mental health challenges in America.
There is a fascinating study from Australia where they looked at two outer islands. One of them had fast food restaurants and the other didn't.
They looked at their omega 3 index and the island with fast food restaurants had significantly lower omega 3 index and 5 times the level of depression just with the food.
It has been said that someone went blind from eating Pringles and French fries because they were so vitamin deficient. They had exophthalmia from vitamin A deficiency. Junk food can make one fat, demented, diabetic and even blind.
We are basically a vitamin deficient society with deficiencies in magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin B and C. 97% of the population is low in omega 3 fatty acids.
Get our brain right and our mind will follow.
How many doctors look at Omega 3 levels in the body? Most don't.
25% of the membranes in our brain are made of omega 3 fatty acids and so if they are low the brain won't talk very well to itself.
New research is that brain cells don't age, but blood cells do age. Anything that damages our blood vessels, damages our brain.
If we know how to increase blood flow (exercise, gingko, beet root, rosemary, and pepper) can simply improve the function of our brain. In simple terms, we can make our brain better.
There was a study from England on who lives the longest. They did a study on sports and people who play racket sports live the longest.
Playing these sports activate the Cerebrum in the brain. Even though it is 10% of the brain's volume, it contains 50% of the brain's neurons. It is not only involved in coordination, but processing speed and thought coordination.
If we play tennis or table tennis, we are activating the cerebrum which has reciprocated connections to our frontal lobes so it is actually making us smarter and more focused and there are no head injuries.

11 Risk Factors
That Destroy the Brain
🌸
Bright Minds
🌸
1) Blood Flow: (low blood flow predicts Alzheimer disease - addictions, depression, add and schizophrenia.
2) Retirement & Aging: If we stop learning, the brain starts dying.
3) Inflammation - More Omega 3: We must improve our microbiome in our gut, no sugar - bread - pasta - rice (4 deadly white powders: white flour, white sugar, cocaine, and too much salt) Less Omega 6 from corn & soy
4) Genetics: Should be a wakeup call what we are vulnerable to including diabetes.
5) Head Trauma: National epidemic, nobody is thinking of rehabilitating the damage that occurred from a past fall or car accident, soccer, and football. By going through rehabilitation, 80% can get better in at least 2 months.
6) Toxins: Marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol are most common. Other hidden include mold exposure, mercury poison from "silver" tooth fillings, lead exposure, furniture with formaldehyde and inhaling organic solvents that dissolve fat. 60% of the solid weight of our brain is fat. They are off gassing from furniture, carpet, and paint. 60% of lipsticks in US have lead "the kiss of death", parabens, and phthalates are hormone disruptors.
Decrease exposure to all these and support the four organs of detoxification: kidneys by drinking more water, gut by eating more fiber, liver by stop drinking alcohol, sweat by exercising or take saunas.
7) Mental Health:
8) Immunity/Infections: Treating lime disease which may be causing mental illness. Look at the chart for the highest percentage of Lyme disease cases and schizophrenia. By treating lime disease they treat schizophrenia.
9) Neurohormone Deficiencies:
10) Diabetes:
11) Sleep:
This is how we keep our brain healthy.
Children's brains are being destroyed, suicide is on the rise, Alzheimer's on the rise, and if we just thought how to take care of our brains, it would all change. Before we make a decision, ask ourselves if this is good for the brain. If we can answer that with information and love then we really are going to be on the road to brain health and mental illness.
The brain doesn't get sick in one way. It's not going to get better often by doing one thing.
If we don't understand everyone's brain and put everybody in a 12-step program, it's not going to be as effective as it could be.
One of the reasons why supplements don't work like gingko or vitamin E is the brain does not get sick in one way so a single supplement like a single medicine or ingredients often don't work. We have to take multiple mechanism approach.
We must regulate all biochemical processes in the body. They regulate hundreds and thousands of enzymes in the body that are required to make our chemical reactions go.
For example, if we don't have vitamin B6, we can't convert tryptophan from the diet into serotonin (a chemical that carries messages between nerve cells in the brain and throughout your body.
Serotonin plays a key role in such body functions as mood, sleep, digestion, nausea, wound healing, bone health, blood clotting and sexual desire.). It's simple biology, we need multi vitamins and they are essential. (tryptophan is an amino acid needed for normal growth in infants and for the production and maintenance of the body's proteins, muscles, enzymes, and neurotransmitters.
It is an essential amino acid. This means your body cannot produce it, so you must get it from your diet.

Choline
🌸
Choline
🌸
“There is a widespread deficiency in choline. Balancing food to brain type can be helpful and choline helps us with memory and learning. People who are vegans often have deficiencies in choline because they're easier to obtain from eggs, meat, poultry, and fish. If we know this, then supplementing it will really help.” – Dr. Daniel Amen
Researching … we looked into it and can suggest Choline is important to produce different amino acids. It’s always part of a structure in the body. In pure choline.
Choline is part of the neurons and vegans may be deficient in a particular enzyme to build up in our body vs. consuming it from animal products.
(Plant foods that are especially rich in choline include cruciferous vegetables, cooked dried beans, quinoa, tofu, oats, cabbage - green vegetables, potatoes, nuts, seeds, grains, and fruit—all of which contain some amounts of choline).
Dr. Daniel Amen's statement on Choline is not correct ... that it is due to not being consumed from meat and dairy.

Hippocampus, the brain’s key memory and learning center, has the lowest blood flow in marijuana users suggesting higher vulnerability to Alzheimer’s
Costa Mesa, CA - As the U.S. races to legalize marijuana for medicinal and recreational use, a new, large scale brain imaging study gives reason for caution. Published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, researchers using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), a sophisticated imaging study that evaluates blood flow and activity patterns, demonstrated abnormally low blood flow in virtually every area of the brain studies in nearly 1,000 marijuana compared to healthy controls, including areas known to be affected by Alzheimer’s pathology such as the hippocampus.
All datawere obtained for analysis from a large multisite database, involving 26,268 patients who came for evaluation of complex, treatment resistant issues to one of nine outpatient neuropsychiatric clinics across the United States (Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Fairfield, and Brisbane, CA, Tacoma and Bellevue, WA, Reston, VA, Atlanta, GA and New York, NY) between 1995-2015.
Of these, 982 current or former marijuana users had brain SPECT at rest and during a mental concentration task compared to almost 100 healhty controls. Predictive analytics with discriminant analysis was done to determine if brain SPECT regions can distinguish marijuana user brains from controls brain.
Low blood flow in the hippocampus in marijuana users reliably distinguished marijuana users from controls. The right hippocampus during a concentration task was the single most predictive region in distinguishing marijuana users from their normal counterparts. Marijuana use is thought to interfere with memory formation by inhibiting activity in this part of the brain.
According to one of the co-authors on the study Elisabeth Jorandby, M.D., “As a physician who routinely sees marijuana users, what struck me was not only the global reduction in blood flow in the marijuana users brains , but that the hippocampus was the most affected region due to its role in memory and Alzheimer’s disease.
Our research has proven that marijuana users have lower cerebral blood flow than non-users. Second, the most predictive region separating these two groups is low blood flow in the hippocampus on concentration brain SPECT imaging. This work suggests that marijuana use has damaging influences in the brain – particularly regions important in memory and learning and known to be affected by Alzheimer’s.”
Dr. George Perry, Editor in Chief of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease said, “Open use of marijuana, through legalization, will reveal the wide range of marijuana's benefits and threats to human health. This study indicates troubling effects on the hippocampus that may be the harbingers of brain damage.”
According to Daniel Amen, M.D., Founder of Amen Clinics, “Our research demonstrates that marijuana can have significant negative effects on brain function. The media has given the general impression that marijuana is a safe recreational drug, this research directly challenges that notion. In another new study just released, researchers showed that marijuana use tripled the risk of psychosis. Caution is clearly in order."
Amen DG, Darmal B, Raji CA, Bao W, Jorandby L, Meysami S, Raghavendra CS (2017) Discriminative Properties of Hippocampal Hypoperfusion in Marijuana Users Compared to Healthy Controls: Implications for Marijuana Administration in Alzheimer's Dementia. J Alzheimers Dis, doi: 10.3233/JAD-160833.
Figure legend: Example of a volume rendered brain SPECT image (top down view) of a healthy control compared to an 18-year old daily user of marijuana. While the control subject has symmetric activity, the marijuana user shows overall decreased perfusion.
