The Importance
of Food Combining

Careful food combining can dramatically improve
the quality of digestion,
support the body in receiving a deeper level of nourishment,
and positively impact our overall health.
🌸
However, most people in the modern world are accustomed
to eating a number of foods
that do not usually digest well together
(like fruit with nuts,
or beans with cheese).

There are sound physiological reasons for eating foods in compatible combinations. In other words, some foods, if mixed in the digestive system, will cause distress!
The principles of food combining are dictated by digestive chemistry.
Different foods are digested differently...
As any student of chemistry will assure you, acids and bases (alkalis) neutralize each other. If you eat a starch with a protein, digestion is impaired or completely arrested!
The undigested food mass can cause various kinds of digestive disorders. Undigested food becomes soil for bacteria which ferment and decompose it. Its by products are poisonous, one of which, alcohol, is a narcotic that destroys or inhibits nerve function.
It plays havoc with nerves of the digestive tract, suspending their vital action such that constipation may well be a result! As set forth in Dr. Herbert Shelton's FOOD COMBINING MADE EASY these are the salient rules for proper food combining.
The Nine Basic Rules of Proper Food Combining:
1. Eat acids and starches at separate meals. Acids neutralize the alkaline medium required for starch digestion and the result is fermentation and indigestion.
2. Eat protein foods and carbohydrate foods at separate meals. Protein foods require an acid medium for digestion.
3. Eat but one kind of protein food at a meal.
4. Eat proteins and acid foods at separate meals. The acids of acid foods inhibit the secretion of the digestive acids required for protein digestion. Undigested protein putrefies in bacterial decomposition and produces some potent poisons.
5. Eat fats and proteins at separate meals. Some foods, especially nuts, are over 50% fat and require hours for digestion.
6. Eat sugars (fruits) and proteins at separate meals.
7. Eat sugars (fruits) and starchy foods at separate meals. Fruits undergo no digestion in the stomach and are held up if eaten with foods that require digestion in the stomach.
8. Eat melons alone. They combine with almost no other food.
9. Desert the desserts. Eaten on top of meals they lie heavy on the stomach, requiring no digestion there, and ferment. Bacteria turn them into alcohols and vinegars and acetic acids.
Healthy Foods to Eat

The principles of food combining are dictated by digestive chemistry.
Different foods are digested differently...
- Starchy foods require an alkaline digestive medium which is supplied initially in the mouth by the enzyme ptyalin;
- Protein foods require an acid medium for digestion- hydrochloric acid.
As any student of chemistry will assure you, acids and bases (alkalis) neutralize each other. If you eat a starch with a protein, digestion is impaired or completely arrested!

How much do you know about proper food combining?
🌸
🌸
You might be surprised just how important food combining is when it comes to your health and how you feel after a meal.
When you eat something, digestion starts in your mouth when you chew and saliva starts breaking it down. It’s important to chew your food very thoroughly before swallowing to allow the saliva to start breaking down the carbohydrates. Even if you are drinking juice or eating a smoothie, it’s important to eat slowly and “chew” your liquids as you eat them.
Digestion continues as your food moves into your stomach and small intestine. Your body assimilates the nutrients as it absorbs them into the bloodstream and into the cells after they have been broken down by the digestive processes.
In order for your body to properly digest and assimilate all the wonderful nutrition from your food and use it properly in the body, it needs to be properly combined.
Different foods digest differently and at different rates depending on their water content and nutritional profile. Your body digests carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in separate processes and cannot digest them properly when not properly combined.
Here are some basic proper food combining rules to help you get the most from your healthy plant food choices:
Highly recommended Dr. Douglas N. Graham’s “The 80/10/10 Reference Guide on Food Combinations & Nutrition” is a great little guide to keep handy in your kitchen.
Recommended books.

Here are some basic proper food combining rules to help you get the most from your healthy plant food choices:
- It’s easiest for the body to digest one food at a time (mono-meals).
- Multiple foods that are similar (like nectarines and peaches) in simple combinations can digest well together.
- The more complex the combination, digestion becomes difficult.
- Lettuce and Celery combine well with any other food type.
- Fruits digest faster than Vegetables, Grains, Legumes, Nuts, and Seeds.
- Juice digests faster due to low fiber content.
- High Fat and Protein content foods digest slower.
- It’s best to eat melons and durian alone.

WHAT IS GOUT?

Gout is a form of arthritis that can be extremely painful.
Gout occurs when the person's kidneys cannot get rid of the substance quickly enough.
Uric acid crystals then form inside joints and under the skin, leading to intense pain.
Uric acid crystals in the kidneys can also lead to kidney stones and a severe reduction in kidney function.
Over time, uric-acid crystals can form in and around the joints, which can trigger severe inflammation that usually settles within a week.
In any day, about three-quarters of the urate in our bodies comes from the breakdown of purines produced within our body, while only about a quarter comes from the breakdown of purines in food and drink we consume.
Foods and drinks high in purines include:

Banana and Milk
🌸
Based on Ayurvedic food principles, bananas and milk are two ingredients that are considered incompatible.
Ayurveda is a holistic form of medicine that’s focused on balancing several forms of energy within your body to promote better health
(10Trusted Source).
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5198827/
According to Ayurveda, eating bananas and milk together can diminish agni, or fire,
which is the entity responsible for the digestion and metabolism of foods.
(11Trusted Source).
Consuming bananas and milk is also anecdotally claimed to contribute to sinus congestion and increase the production of toxins in your body.
However, while some research suggests that an Ayurvedic diet may be beneficial for weight management, there’s little research on how it may affect other aspects of health
(12Trusted Source, 13Trusted Source).
