There are some nasty contagious things we can catch in hotel showers
or any other showers.
Not only different strains of nail fungus but there may be EBV
or strep or you could hit the jackpot and get all three!
We want to protect ourselves from further exposures by wearing flip flops
(thongs for my fellow Aussies)
and dousing the floor and surfaces with hydrogen peroxide and let it sit there.
The last thing we need is to pick up any new bugs!

Medical media and health experts advise that hotel rooms—regardless of their star rating—can harbor various fungi, primarily athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), nail fungus, and mold, due to high occupant turnover and inadequate cleaning.
The primary risk areas are carpets, bathroom floors, shower stalls, and air conditioning systems.
Key Fungal Risks & Areas of Concern
Medical Expert Tips for Protection
Note on Candida auris: While Candida auris is a major, drug-resistant fungus currently causing medical media concern, it is primarily associated with healthcare facilities and nursing homes, not typical hotel stays.
The primary risk areas are carpets, bathroom floors, shower stalls, and air conditioning systems.
Key Fungal Risks & Areas of Concern
- Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis): This is commonly picked up by walking barefoot on hotel carpets, which act as reservoirs for fungal spores from previous guests.
- Bathroom Fungi: Damp environments in hotel bathrooms, particularly in grout lines, shower curtains, and on mats, allow fungi to grow and thrive.
- Mold in Air Conditioning: Poorly maintained AC units can circulate mold spores, such as Alternaria and Acremonium, which can cause respiratory issues or "hotel sickness".
- Jetted Tubs: Jetted tubs are high-risk areas because mold can grow inside the water lines, which are rarely sanitized between guests.
- Under-carpet Contamination: Carpets in high-traffic rooms are rarely deeply cleaned between guests and often harbor moisture that leads to mold.
Medical Expert Tips for Protection
- Wear Shower Shoes: Never walk barefoot on hotel carpet or in the bathroom; wear flip-flops or slippers, especially in shower areas.
- Check the Air: If a hotel room smells musty, it is a sign of mold, and you should ask for a new room immediately.
- Sanitize the Remote: TV remotes are frequently contaminated, along with light switches, which should be sanitized with wipes.
- Bring Your Own Shower Gear: Use personal toiletries to avoid bacteria and fungi in refillable, communal soap dispensers.
- Use a Laundry Bag: Keep your shoes and dirty laundry separate from the clean areas of your hotel room to prevent spreading fungi back into your luggage.
